Henry M. Sobell completed his studies at Brooklyn Technical High School (1948-1952), Columbia College (1952-1956), and the University of Virginia School of Medicine (1956-1960). Instead of practicing clinical medicine, he then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to join Professor Alexander Rich in the Department of Biology (1960-1965), where, as a Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellow, he learned the technique of single crystal X-ray analysis. He then joined the Chemistry Department at the University of Rochester, having been subsequently jointly appointed to both the Chemistry and Molecular Biophysics departments (the latter at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry), becoming a full tenured Professor in both departments (1965-1993). He is now retired and living in the Adirondacks in New York, USA.

Musselman has studied Bible plants for three decades and has published several books — including Jordan in Bloom (2000), which was commissioned by Queen Rania Al-Abdullah — and numerous articles on their identification, symbolism, and use in the holy writings. He received his Ph.D. in botany from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and is currently the Mary Payne Hogan Professor of Botany and chair of the department of biological sciences at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In May 2004, he was awarded the Provost's Award for Leadership in International Education. In 1984 Musselman established the Blackwater Ecologic Preserve on land that was donated by Union Camp Corporation (now International Paper). He is currently responsible for the development and execution of management and monitoring plans, coordination with state and private partners, and overseeing the general use of the property.
His laboratory takes a holistic approach to plant breeding, using both classical and molecular breeding tools to develop improved ornamental cultivars adapted to the growing conditions of the U.S. Gulf Coast region. My research interests include hybridization, application of in vitro mutation techniques and recombinant DNA technologies toward the genetic improvement of herbaceous ornamental plants.

He is recognized as a pioneer in the field of biocontrol and induced resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. He Trained more than 30 Ph.D. and 55 M.Sc. students. published more than 395 articles in international scientific journals, trained more than 30 PhD and 55 MSc students, edited 5 books in his field of research and owns 38 patents. He was the founding Director of the Otto Warburg Minerva Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Dean at the Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot, Vice President for Research and Development at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; nominated President of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot. He is recognized as a pioneer in the field of biocontrol and induced resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. Positions: (1986–1989);, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1991–2001).
