Welcome message

Sessions/Track

Session on Industrial biotechnology:

To produce materials for industry, like chemicals, plastics, food, agricultural and pharmaceutical products and energy carriers. Industrial biotechnology, which is often referred as white biotechnology utilizes microorganisms and enzymes. Waste generated from agriculture and forestry and renewable raw materials are used for the production of industrial goods. It also contributes to lowering of greenhouse gas emissions and moving away from a petrochemical based economy.

Session on Protein engineering tools and application:

This is the again one of the key tools for industrial biotechnology. Using a wild-type enzyme which is discovered in nature is not acceptable for an industrial process. It has to be engineered and optimized in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability. Some enzymes may have a high demand for industrial use, but due to its chemical properties it may loose its importance. Therefore these enzymes are modified so that it can withstand harsh conditions. These properties will comprise to maximize the yield.

Session on Biofuels and Biorefineries:

As the fact is known that fossil fuels are going to last for only 100 more years, the best renewable alternative way is biofuel. The synthesis requires biological processes, such as anaerobic digestionfermentation, transesterification. Biofuels can be extracted directly from plants, or indirectly from agricultural, commercial, domestic, and/or industrial wastes. This is different from other renewable energy sources, biomass can be directly converted into bio fuels using various substrates.

Due to a lot of disadvantages in the conventional methods of recovering oil there is a need of another option and in the search for environment friendly solutions, growing attention has been given to biotechnology such as the use of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR).The MEOR constitute injection of microorganisms with necessary nutrients into the oil well, and under favorable conditions microbial population grows and their metabolic products produces oil.

Session on Bioaugmentation:

In waste water treatment plants the application of activated sluge which consists of microrganisms which biodegrade the pollutants present, has limitations because many pollutants are not efficiently eliminated. To overcome these limitations, bioaugmentation has been developed, i.e. adding specific and efficient pollutant-biodegrading microorganisms that will increase the ability of this microbial community to biodegrade contaminants, and thus the waste water can be recycled.
